What is the Canada Learning Bond?

The Canada Learning Bond (CLB) is a federal government grant available to children in lower income families to help them start saving early for education after high school.

Who can receive the Canada Learning Bond?

• Those families whose child was born after December 31, 2003 , and
• Whose monthly Canada Child Tax Benefit payment (commonly known as "baby bonus" or "family allowance") includes the National Child Benefit Supplement, and
• Whose child or children have an RESP registered in their name.

How much is the Canada Learning Bond?

• $500 when you open the RESP, plus $25 to help cover the cost of opening the RESP.
• An additional $100 per year up to age 15, as long as the family continues to receive the National Child Benefit Supplement.
• The maximum amount each child can receive under the CLB is $2,000.

Does money have to be put into an RESP to get the Canada Learning Bond?

No. Even if money is not placed into a child’s RESP, the Government of Canada will deposit the CLB directly into the RESP.
